Quick answer

Official material confirms food, water, weather, hunting, fishing, cooking, shelter, and hostile threats as parts of Western Rye’s survival layer. Meter behavior, status effects, healing, death penalties, and optimal priorities are not yet verified in the launch build.

Food and water are confirmed needs

Official Western Rye material describes a frontier where food and water matter. Farming, ranching, hunting, fishing, cooking, a stove, and a water well all connect to those needs. This supports a real survival layer, but it does not reveal meter speeds, nutrition values, contamination, spoilage, or the earliest reliable food source.

Before direct testing, the responsible advice is to establish access to sustenance and watch the game’s own onboarding rather than follow imported values from an older demo.

Weather and shelter

Changing weather is part of the official world description, and homestead construction gives players a place to prepare. The current sources do not specify temperature thresholds, exposure meters, storm damage, clothing statistics, or whether every weather event changes survival needs.

Shelter is therefore a sensible strategic category, not yet a quantified rule. The launch audit will test what buildings protect against and whether placement or completeness matters.

Hunting, fishing, and cooking

Hunting and fishing are named ways to engage with the frontier, while cooking and farm production support food preparation. Wildlife also contributes danger beyond resource gathering. Exact species, bait, tool requirements, cooking stations, recipe effects, and food values are not public enough to build reliable tables.

The farming guide tracks the confirmed crops and ranch animals. The crafting guide tracks the verified resource-to-equipment chain without filling in recipe gaps.

Hostile threats and Rye Fever

The setting is recovering from the mysterious Rye Fever. Official material names infected Husk alongside outlaw or bandit groups, cannibal cultists, other hostile factions, and wildlife. Combat is supported with revolvers, shotguns, and rifles or repeaters.

The theme does not prove a player infection mechanic, disease meter, cure system, or specific status effect. Those mechanics remain unknown unless the launch build or developer documentation confirms them.

Healing, death, and respawn unknowns

Current official copy does not provide enough detail to state how healing works, what happens on death, where players respawn, whether inventory drops, or how co-op revives behave. Any precise answer before testing would be speculation.

Launch survival audit

After Early Access opens, this page will document actual food and water behavior, weather effects, healing, status conditions, sleep, death penalties, respawn, and the earliest sustainable routine. Observations will be separated from developer claims and retested after meaningful patches.

What this guide is based on

The factual core comes from the current official Steam listing and Nixalon Studios material, checked August 23, 2026. Pre-release mechanics can change. Where the source does not publish a value or behavior, this guide says so instead of filling the gap with an estimate.
